Vital Waters: Reimagining Planetary Health through Critical Social Sciences

Uppsala University: University Main Building, Sal IV Uppsala

You are warmly invited to participate in this interdisciplinary symposium exploring how planetary-scale transformations of water — through climatic changes, infrastructural expansion, extraction, contamination, and purification — are reshaping health futures. This symposium examines water-health connections through infrastructure, governance, and lived experiences, drawing on empirical social science research in an unequal world. Through cross-disciplinary dialogue, it seeks to reimagine how we conceptualise and respond to water-related health challenges on a rapidly changing planet. The Vital Waters Symposium is co-organised by the Centre for Health & Sustainability, the Dept of Cultural Anthropology & Ethnology, and UUniCORN with the support from SHIP, Sustainable Health in Partnership. Register by 13 April! Read more about the event, including programme, and registration link here. Planetary, Global, Public or One Health? In search of a common purpose in times of sustainability crisis.

Hybrid

This seminar unpacks and interrogates the concepts of planetary health, global health, public health and one health. Each of these terms embeds assumptions about what kind of knowledge counts, who defines "health," and which concerns are centered. We will explore the origins of these terms, who mobilizes them, their prominent narratives, and their limitations as singular lenses to address the multiple interacting health and sustainability crises the world is facing. We will discuss how scholars from all disciplines, practitioners, communicators, and policy makers, including those outside the conventional ‘health’ sector, may not find consensus, but can find a common purpose. Following a talk, the seminar will feature an audience discussion on the experiences with 'sustainable health' as a bridging concept across these often siloed concepts in health and sustainability. Read more about the event on UUniCORN's website. This seminar is part of the SHIP dialogue series New Perspectives on Sustainable Health, which aims to identify areas of intersection between disciplines, reveal blind spots and disconnects, and build a shared language for sustainable health that can inspire both practical insights and future collaborations. Sustainable Health: A Round-Table Discussion on the Cloudburst in Bergsvik 2035

Online

In collaboration between UTRI and SHIP, a group of researchers gathers to work from a fictional case of a realistic crisis situation and then meet in a roundtable discussion to explore how they understand and interpret the scenario. What consequences do crises have for society, the environment, and people—and how can different research disciplines collaborate to understand both needs and solutions? This event was held in Swedish, but was recorded with English subtitles and published on the UTRI web. Read more about the event here:  Skyfallet i Bergsvik 2035 Participating in the round-table discussion are: Magnus Evander, professor in virology/One Health Maria Furberg, physician, specialist in general medicine and infectious diseases Sofie Jeppsson, associate professor of philosophy Daniel Metcalfe, professor in ecology Karin Tegmark Wisell, ambassador for global health Sverker Olofsson, moderator This round-table discussion is part of the SHIP dialogue series New Perspectives on Sustainable Health, which aims to identify areas of intersection between disciplines, reveal blind spots and disconnects, and build a shared language for sustainable health that can inspire both practical insights and future collaborations.
