Values
SHIP is grounded in the academic values of freedom, ethics, integrity, and excellence in education and research. Its methods and practices are guided by core principles: scientific rigor, dedication, and inclusivity.
SCIENTIFIC RIGOR
Independence, objectivity, and intellectual depth define the approach, with an open and critical mindset that allows time for thoughtful analysis and reflection. The free pursuit of knowledge is fundamental.
DEDICATION
Commitment to sustainability and excellence supports universities’ success, with the courage to challenge conventions and explore new ideas, learning from both achievements and setbacks. A forward-thinking approach driven by curiosity and innovation is essential.
INCLUSIVITY
Collaboration and mutual learning are fostered through a holistic approach. Knowledge is advanced in partnership with students, the academic community, and society. Equality, openness, trust, and respect form the foundation of the work environment.
Organization
Member Universities
SHIP comprises five Swedish universities: Karolinska Institutet, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umeå University, Uppsala University, and Örebro University.
Local Hubs
Each member university is in the process of establishing a local hub. These hubs will facilitate internal communication, set local priorities, and serve as the main link between their university, other local hubs, and the SHIP Team.
Steering Committee
The Steering Committee provides visionary leadership, ensuring SHIP’s alignment with societal needs and long-term funding. It is composed of vice-chancellors or their designated representatives from member universities.
SHIP Team
The Team oversees SHIP’s strategic development, operational structure, and overall coordination.
New membership opportunities
SHIP is welcoming additional Swedish universities to join in 2026, with the inclusion process initiated in 2025.
“By combining resources, each university strengthens its expertise while benefiting from the strengths of others. This joint effort elevates Swedish higher education, research, and innovation for sustainable health—without compromising the independence of individual universities. Together, we position Sweden as a global leader in research and innovation for sustainable health.”
– Anders Hagfeldt, Chair of SHIP Steering Committee
